"This cover has set the tone for my entire next record. I recorded the tracks for this song directly to quarter-inch 8-track tape on my Tascam 388 and mixed it live straight from the tape with zero editing or computer processing. I feel the recording captures the spirit of The Kinks' song while bringing the vibe stylistically through the 70's, 80's and 90's and into the modern musical world.
I enjoyed recording the two guitars through my fuzz pedal with an all-but-dead battery, then directly into the console with zero guitar amp, for the grittiest tone ever. I used my early 1970's Arp Odyssey analog synthesizer for the bridge to try to recreate an old Ondioline sound. I even brought in an 808 drum machine to painstakingly stack with the real drums. There was nothing more terrifying and more liberating than committing — as I bounced down all my drum tracks to mono (yes mono) to make room for more instruments and vocals. And likewise, laying down vocals with chorus and delay printed right onto the track – No take-backs baby!
Recording with only eight tracks was a challenge that forced me to completely rethink my process. But ultimately the limitation sparked way more creativity and decisiveness in me as an artist and a producer. I really hope you enjoy listening to the song as much as I enjoyed making it."
